Indian Horse: e-learning modules

Project Description

Through this project, our hope is to build understanding in non-Indigenous Canadians about why things look the way they do for Indigenous Peoples today. We will be rolling out interactive educational modules starting in September 2018 for the school year. Our resources will help students and educators discuss this history in a safe and culturally relevant way.
Richard Wagamese’ award-winning novel Indian Horse is being taught in thousands of Canadian classrooms, with over 100,000 copies of the book in circulation. The story of Saul Indian Horse hit the big screen back in April 2018. Now we have launched the educational DVD.  Help us make sure that the Indian Horse film reaches high school classrooms across the country, and that it has long-tale life as a resource that fosters empathy, healing and understanding.

Living Well

Project Description

This video was created for the First Nations Health Council (FNHC) and was shown at Gathering Wisdom X conference in May 2018.
Often, what are described as the ‘determinants of health’ are really the determinants of disease -- through this work we will take a strengths-based approach, that will connect the work being done by the FNHC, all the regional representatives, and health directors to the ‘social determinants of resilience’, put in its most simple terms:  What it means to be Living Well.

Strong Medicine

Strong Medicine is an educational video developed by the Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network and CATIE, with and for Indigenous people living with HIV.
By weaving together Indigenous knowledges of culture and wellbeing and Western knowledge of HIV testing and treatment, this video shares accurate information about HIV testing and treatment. It encourages people to get tested and to start, resume or stay on HIV treatment for their own health and wellbeing. This video is a positive and supportive educational tool for all Indigenous people living with HIV and those affected by HIV. It can be viewed in its entirety or in chapters.

Coyotes Food Medicines

Project Description

Storytelling has always been a traditional way to share knowledge and wisdom. Now we have new tools to share old ways, and to take on new problems. In July 2016, Secwepemc Elders were asked to help develop a teaching story about prescription medicine, This story reflects some of the cultural teachers/animals of the Secwepemc’ulcw people.
From this conversation the story of Coyote’s Food Medicines emerged. Coyote is on a mission to collect medicines - but will everything go as planned? Often stories include the Trickster character, who can be both humorous and heroic, helping to teach through its mix of cunning, foolishness and ambition.

Let's Involve Women in Village Budgeting! e-Course

Project Description

We developed an e-learning course for Oxfam Canada that was part of a larger “Power Up” women’s empowerment project in Indonesia, which encourages women’s participation in the budgeting process. This interactive module inspires women to get the issues they care about on the village agenda and funded, while providing tips on how to navigate the process and overcome barriers.

To make the process more relatable and overcome low literacy barriers, we created a series of animated videos following the journey of a young Indonesian woman expecting her first child. The responsive HTML 5 course is optimized for mobile users and will be made available online as a web-application or it can downloaded offline as a free-standing module for desktop users. The videos with both Indonesian and English closed captions are also be available. This project has been very well received in the Indonesian villages it was intended for.

We made these short, sharable films in collaboration with the First Nations Technology Council to help position them as a culturally safe way to look at how technology, innovation and entrepreneurship can benefit indigenous people and communities. We also created their cool video banner on their new website!

Vancouver Coastal Health - Sneezes+Diseases

Project Description

After creating a series of graphics for Vancouver Coastal Health's Communicable Disease Control Program to use in their outreach materials, we developed a new website under the brand identity, “Sneezes+Diseases.” Their first website, VCH CDC needed a user-friendly solution to manage their program's content and resources that would operate in tandem with a myriad of VCH web properties. The site includes password protected areas, integrated news and resource feeds targeted to multiple audiences, and an online manual for disease control training.
We worked closely with VCH CDC to organize and adapt their content and resources into audience friendly formats, and build them a website customized to their unique needs.
