Hello Cool World goes to Pride House!

By David Ng On March 09, 2010 | 0 Comments

Hello Cool World checked out Pride House during the Olympics in Vancouver, where we hung out and had a chat with one of the ambassadors.  Pride House was exactly what we were hoping it would be – a positive and safe queer space for people to be themselves and enjoy the Olympics.  The issue of gender and sexuality is not far from the Olympics – the homophobic comments made by critics about Johnny Weir, and the exclusion of women from ski jumping in the Olympics are such examples of the gender stereotypes that are still prevalent in sports.  We learned that Pride House’s main goal was to provide refugee information for people who may be from other countries where it is dangerous to be queer.  Pride House aims to also create a space where all people, regardless of sexuality and gender can come together and enjoy the Olympics.  It is the hope of Pride House to encourage other Pride Houses in future international sporting events like the Olympics.
